- Breed Description
The Treeing Walker Coonhound has propulsive speed, endurance and an indomitable prey drive. Hunters prize the breed not only for his hunting abilities but for his lovable, soulful companionship. He's openhearted and gets along with everyone, including kids and family pets. Your Treeing Walker Coonhound puppy is smart and eager to learn and needs lots of exercise, both physical and mental. Given his strong prey drive, he should always be walked on a leash. And when work is done, you couldn't ask for a gentler, more loving canine friend.
- History & Job
Origin: United States
Year Recognized: 2012
Breed History & Job Description: Let’s unpack the name a word at a time. “Treeing” refers to a hound trailing the scent of his quarry until the quarry scurries up a tree for safety, with the hound camping out below and barking, vigorously and distinctively, for as long as it takes for the gun-toting hunter to arrive. “Walker” is Thomas Walker, of Virginia, who in the mid-1700s was a pivotal figure of the breed’s early development. “Coonhound” is a dog developed to “tree” raccoons and, sometimes, bigger game.
Treeing Walker Coonhounds are generally a healthy breed. Like all breeds there may be some health issues, like hip dysplasia and eye disease. Some dogs may be faced with these health challenges in their lives, but the majority of Treeing Walker Coonhounds are healthy dogs.
