- History & Job
Breed History & Job Description: The Norrbottenspets is named for Norrbotten, the northernmost province of Sweden. It was here and neighboring Finland that this hearty little hunter worked on birds and small game, as well as serving as an all-around farm dog. For centuries the Nob was a common sight in Sweden, but by the 1940s it was rapidly going extinct. The Nob’s low point came in 1948, when the Swedish Kennel Club closed the breed’s studbook. The Nob hung on, however, in Sweden’s most remote villages. In the post–World War II era, the Nob made a comeback and was readmitted to the Swedish studbook in 1967.
Norrbottenspets are generally a healthy breed Like all breeds there may be some health issues. Some dogs may be faced with these health challenges in their lives, but the majority of Norrbottenspets are healthy dogs.
