- History & Job
Breed History & Job Description: Despite the “Grand” in their name GBGVs aren’t huge, standing no higher than 18 inches at the shoulder. They are, though, grand indeed when standing beside their smaller cousin, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen. Both breeds were developed to be pack hounds hunting rabbit and hare on the scrubby, rocky terrain of the Vendée, a coastal region of France. GBGV packs have also been used on bigger game, such as boar and deer. The GBGV had a long history with French royalty, and some of the noble bearing of their long-ago masters has rubbed off on these merry hounds.
Grand Basset Griffon Vendeens are generally a healthy breed. Like all breeds there may be some health issues. Some dogs may be faced with these health challenges in their lives, but the majority of Grand Basset Griffon Vendeens are healthy dogs.
