Breeder Info: Ravenhill
Billie Sumrell is from North Carolina and breeds German Shepherd Dogs. I have been breeding show and working line OFA'd German Shepherds since 1977. I had both import and American lines when I started, but focus on dogs from titled import show and working lines. This ensures that hips and elbows are checked before they are titled, and the imports all have their 1st title before they are ever bred. These dogs are sound, intelligent and are ideal companion dogs as well as personal protection and working dogs. 90% of my dogs go into family situations and make incredible pets, easily trained and not too intense to work with. I am very selective about the lines I have and the temperament associated with those lines. Dogs are either OFA'd through American testing or import testing, microchipped, at least 3 wormings and shots at appropriate ages. I became involved with the breed while in Vet Tech school in 1977. I became involved with the (Jack) Russell terriers in 1989. At the time, JRTCA was the only qualified registration for the USA and I pursued the working Russells and bred accordingly. My dogs hailed from England, the country of origin. Most of what I had at the time were the smooth working lines but later became involved in showing in UKC. I was contacted by the founder of the AKC parent club in 2009 and after corresponding, Elk Creek Beamer (rough Australian) was sent to the kennel and I completed his CM in FSS. We became fully recognized in AKC in July 2012 and all of my dogs qualified for full AKC recognition. I have another Elk Creek male here, Elk Creek Duke (smooth English) an older dog that is still FSS (since previous generations were documented by UKC) but since all of his pups are 3rd generation AKC, all pups sired by him have full AKC registration. I had two other males in the kennel, now retired that were related to the females I had that I now breed to DiDi (Elk Creek Duke) and Ravenhill's Ima Trooper (Elk Creek Beamer/Ravenhill's Abigail). I cross smooth, broken and rough. This helps ensure the coats don't get soft and fluffy or the smooths aren't too "tight". All coats should retain a "double coat". Ideally the ears tip, but occasionally they will be small enough and light enough that an ear will prick. This is fine for pets, not acceptable in the show ring however. Tails are NOT cut short like they were many years ago but left natural or "tipped" when the dew claws are removed to ensure that they are not too long and can be damaged if the dogs are used as "Earthdogs" and go underground. All of my dog are microchipped and ALL of my puppies are microchipped with AKC ReUnite Universal chips before they go to their new homes. Genetic screenings are essential for all of my lines, health checks, socialization, shots and wormings are mandatory for any dog/pup sold. AKC proudly supports dedicated and responsible breeders. We encourage all prospective puppy owners to do their research and be prepared with questions to ask the breeder. Make sure you are not only choosing the right breed for you, but also that you’re getting it from the right individual.
